OYSTER
Layer on layer
The river keeps arriving
The sea keeps answering
Between them
The Oyster.
Never fixed
Never finished
Breathing.
Becoming.
Held in the meeting place
Not one thing or the other
But both
And slowly -
almost imperceptibly -
the shoreline shifts a little
—
OYSTER is the first solo theatre show from award-winning artist and innovator Malin Lewis.
Blending spoken word, design, Scottish folk and electronic music, Malin conjures a hypnotic and richly immersive world. OYSTER deconstructs and reimagines the traditions and landscapes Malin grew up within, offering an entrancing exploration of transness, the inherent queerness of nature, and the muddy, transformative world of oysters.
The oyster acts as both subject and metaphor. The oyster grows in the muddy place in-between. It creates pearl from grist. Born male and becomes female; the oyster offers a framework through which to explore gender, resilience, becoming and continuing. OYSTER offers a space to reflect on the ways our own identities can shift, grow and transform.
Surreal, intimate and evocative, OYSTER is a journey through transformation and identity. Inviting us to reconsider what happens when we move beyond the boundaries and binaries we have been taught to recognise, giving opportunity to relearn the possibilities of the natural world.
